I have a client that I’m working with right now who recently completed a major renovation on her home here in Napa. They made some awesome improvements including moving and expanding the kitchen as well as vaulting the ceiling. While working on window treatments for some of her other spaces, I kept coming back to the kitchen trying to figure out how to finish the space. She wanted to add color and some year-round accessories to adorn her kitchen, but for some reason that didn’t feel like enough to me. Whenever I work on a new project, I always take ‘before’ photos of the space as well as dimensions of the room. While looking at the photos one day, I realized exactly what this space needed. Some height! While they had vaulted the ceilings and added some nice custom cabinetry, the window just didn’t feel tall enough for the space. And while we didn’t want to block their amazing vineyard view, it made sense to add a custom fixed roman shade above the window. The shade helps to do a few things. One, it frames the window and makes it look finished. Two, it added much needed height and keeps the line of site at the same level. Now the window looks like the height of the adjacent cabinets. Third and perhaps most importantly, it doesn’t block that gorgeous vineyard view.
When thinking about window treatments for your own home, really look at the dimensions of the window and where you are going to place your window treatments. Sometimes the difference of a few inches can make or break the window. In terms of height, I always attempt to go as close to the ceiling as possible to add height and substance to a space. I also make every attempt to not block natural light from coming through with heavy curtains, unless of course major afternoon sun is an issue.
I have a great drapery workroom that I’ve been using for years and together we can make anything you can imagine. If you need help with window treatments, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. My first love is fabric, so it’s always a fun day when I get to play around with fabric and custom window treatments!
